Germany and Ireland. Ubergultig?

 In Germany,you are paid according to the athlete in your family's opinion of your merits or abilities,not your school's and certainly not your university's or parents since the Germans have always held the Dozent in contempt,a habit learned from those who know of university professors irregular and unpalatable taste in clothes, literature and music,not forgetting what attracts them to university lecturing,namely the prospect of sex with young virgins or men.

Travel and circumstance

Young men and adventurers both are advised to travel widely by their parents when they are young and impressionable.

But what does travel in Europe reveal? Firstly,it will take about two years to realise that the Germans are masters of deception and,like the French who a reasonably intelligent person will get to know after three months, thugs,self-obsessed idiots and non corpus mentis. Both countries regularly fall under the sway of democratically-elected dictators. Both have a natural predisposition to flights of fantasy and writing weighty tomes which only the Russians regard as important or relevant to contemporary society. The Irish and English are much better writers.

The English?

It will take about sjsix months to discover that all English people,regardless of colour or nationality,are racist bigots and fascist revanchist who 'wouldn't work on batteries'. It is a fool's pursuit trying to talk common sense to an Englishman since he is at heart like the Irishman who he takes under his wing, a hooligan who delights in violence and death, injury and intrigue.

A warm welcome and a casual invitation. Germany,1979. A guide to working students concerning German working systems and union organisers...

"Mach's Pause!" is said by a shift-leader to a young,over-zealous, usually foreign worker in Germany when he wants him to work at his own pace to avoid redundancy or to learn the benefits of trade unionism and abandon further education.

However,the little Irish mother at home wanted me home for Christmas to celebrate six months continuous employment in my first full-time job.

I had been accepted into Queen University Belfast to study law the following year and turned down the request of this German trade unionist to join IG Tiefbau.

An Irishman who goes to Germany when still in his formative years is a person who develops into a good all-rounder and a brilliant manager of men and resources. Despite the bad press Germany has always had since the Agadir incident,Germany is way out ahead of anything Britain can produce in terms of the fighting man or the average level of electrical or mechanical technique in any field particularly when compared to Britain,France or Spain but not Italy. Despite a smaller population,Italy is well ahead of Germany in terms of man management and technology and even further ahead of the US and Canada apart from the  fields of aerospace and aeronautical engineering.

The end of foreign investment in Ireland and the end of technical transfers
