Economic balance is only partially accommodated by a written agreement between employers, state and trade unions.  Medicines should never be completely free but it is best if only a token amount of €1 was charged to dissuade waste and superfluous visits to doctors and needless consultations with medical personnel. However,it is desirable that everyone,not just the publicly insured, should have ready access to medicine for a token fee. Pharmacies? Community pharmacies with sole proprietors only should be licensed to prevent profiteering from human suffering and needless interventions by multi-millionaire pharmaceutical monopolies. The British Welfare State model is not the way forward for the South of Ireland,be well advised. It is not suited to the conditions of a state founded one hundred years ago today,a country which lacks the rudiments of lawful government. Irish,German, Russian,Italian and American nationalism are remarkably similar though with a different emphasis because all are based on the garnering of a domestic market for an emergent class of employers and middlemen.  The question of whether the railways should operate diesel trains or electrify the locomotives is really a non-starter...it is thirty years ago and more since I laid down the basis of the National Development Plan. That document from my pen was entitled the Programme of Irish Socialists. I called for the extension of suburban electric rail to all the suburbs of Dublin,the electrification of inter-city railways and a light railway for Dublin and short-haul buses (the Nipper). What now? Firstly,electrify national railways. Secondly,build the Western Road and Rail Orbital Route to open up the West. Thirdly,things have moved on-it is time for a tramway for Cork City.
