Dublin Sinn Fein. Nationalism and socialism

Dublin Sinn Fein, yes, but first the Northern end of this distended apparatus of former revolotionaries in our divided country....

......Whatever one might say, think or write, and regardless of what one-time luminaries of fading parties and the political forces of the Old Ireland say or do in public, these days Sinn Fein public representatives are the only,if limited by intellect and education, true spokesmen and -women for the poor and marginalised. They are a match for right-wing extremists.  Criminals, the Orange Order and the police, bedfellows on most occasions, know very well that it is better not to antagonise, criminalise or brutalise their spokesmen who are former prisoners. The Orange Order are the main architects of police government, those people and their media apologists.

But,why so?

Why have Sinn Fein risen in popularity?

Not solely because of themselves, their bawdy songs, their retinue of drunken women or their violent, male followers rather because of what people now in their late fifties and early sixties did many years ago.

Some of the adherents of traditional republicanism are still in the ranks of Sinn Fein;some of them are hostile to Sinn Fein and most of them are not involved with either side.

Because of the latter's unique experience, they realised very quickly what Sinn Fein's entourage amounted to.

Only the Workers' Party, Catholic hierarchy and former militants see that feature of Irish contemporary society and its political tastes.

The claims of Mary Lou Mc Donald?

Socialist?

Give me a break,would you.

Working class?

Wise up!

The armed struggle,a noble cause?

Anyone who thinks that something is gained by those deaths does not understand that many of the early-1970's IRA men were contract killers.

A party of the worker,then?

Give my head some peace. Their electorate are born idlers. That said, forcing people to work for social security benefits is regressive.

My own experience of Dublin Sinn Fein between July 1988 and April 1992?

The bitter truth of the matter is that of Dublin Sinn Fein it could be said that it is a shambolic organisation with no connection to trade unions apart from the hurler-on-the-ditch type, alcoholics, gamblers, latchikoes and the johnny-come-latelys,never the stable family man or industrious craftsman.

Dublin Sinn Fein is a newspaper and media creation dressed up as a political party. It should eventually give way to a better-educated,more open arrangement if its leading spokesmen leave politics.

Sinn Fein's rise is a sign of the changing of the guard in the South.

Is there an alternative?

On the left, the development of a genuine community and labour alternative may not be far away. Sinn Fein's current popularity will be a fleeting phenomenon like that of all protest parties.

Gunmen such as 1970's Sinn Fein have their origin in the Southern Army. In the decayed society of the South then,a form of publicans' scheming, political parasitism and secret intrigue with rival politicians and foreign agents flourished to exclude well adjusted people from not just representation but waged employment.

In the North, the DUP and the Official Unionists perpetuated sectarian hatred. The Southerners were when they extended the IRA to the North, the successors to bent, sectarian people.

The Good Friday Agreement?

"If you lie down with a dog you get up with fleas," Rory O Brady, wanted it to be known. Someone who saw Adams as a dog returning to his own vomit, the RUC agent Michael Mc Manus, inspired him to utter that piece of doggerel.

I am accused by the PSNI of being an IRA recruiting sergeant and by Sean Lynch of being a "tout". It is wiser not to give any credence to those with a wicked sense of humour or a mild learning disability.

I see in Sinn Fein a phenomenon similar to peasant socialism in 1860's Russia.

.....

The Southern economic miracle?

The politics of Sinn Fein belong to the distant past. Their social aspect for modern Irish democracy conceals the fact that the US bankrolls the South. Both the South and Sinn Fein's followers in America,a rapidly diminishing band, are compromised. Hence the desperate pleading for E.U. doles for spurious causes and government doles to pay election expenses and to buy "courtesy" cars.

Alternatives to Sinn Fein's mish-mash of ideas?

The self-styled revolutionary socialists in left-wing splinter groups? Are the latter leaders in waiting?

No. Emphatically,no!

Democracy allows everyone their say and those people do nothing but talk about others doing something, not themselves.

One thing which I have always noticed about republicans is that they are very well informed about crime.

Democratic socialism,my long-standing allegiance?

I am a socialist of a different stripe,an egalitarian. Unlike Sinn Fein,I do not draw a line in the sand between good and bad poor people. Sinn Fein see in the poor a potential criminal.

Why?

Because Sinn Fein belong to the shopkeeper and publican and farmer class. I believe that,a handful of hardened criminals aside, most people can be rescued from poverty and crime with the development of new forms of educational outreach and employment opportunities.

Beyond Sinn Fein in government?

The cause of religious and social EQUALITY is the only possible means by which divisions between socialists can be mended and an alternative to Sinn Fein's shabby grandstanding built up.
