The 26 Counties:The privatisation of refuse services and waste recycling..

The demands of Auld Dacency can not be reconciled with the state of Dear Old Dirty Dublin. The privatisation of the bins cannot be reconciled with employer-government-employee bargaining at a national level. This is instead an underhand, shabby legacy of Ahern which is not cost-effective. Privatisation is a monstrous burden on the low-waged and poor which it is absolutely by any measure impossible to justify or see the rationale of.

Why would a renegade former FWUI official deal such a defiant blow to organised labour? This is just value-added bubble economic vulturism and the ICTU should  not have allowed this contract to have gone to a a private operator through this exercise in neo-liberalism,a bizarre adventure in fictitious capital...

.. Surely if there were questions of performance or a top-heavy workforce, the contract could have gone to a cooperative or company limited by guarantee, not a get-riçh-quick operator and the same goes for college catering in the Dublin City University and services providers in cleaning and maintenance in hospitals and railway stations..

I have witnessed the decent, ordinary people who work in the North and South of Ireland and I know that they are magnificent and modest, make very moderate demands and live humble, respectable lives in public housing ... sometimes, standards in Dublin are low but strict inspections and labour flexibility could remedy these features of sloppiness in public services and that does not involve beating the bull on the workers' back but by increasing social expectations and reducing enormous differences in purchasing power and facing down obstructive friendly societies...
