The dungfly. The informer

A tout is a weak and pathetic sort of fool who ends up drinking himself to death. He is a fickle sort of creature,a straw in the wind who like the biblical Jew is a wanderer between sky and cloud. However,he can be dangerous so here are my reflections from a lifetime of experience and untoward advances by these pricks.....

A spy or false witness usually acts on his own volition and is interested,inter alia, in  what you listen to on the radio or watch on television. He is a sociopath who likes to alter outcomes and he gets money from the police for telling them such information.The police have the power to influence broadcasting content and schedules. It's MONEY which motivates the hound most.

 Sometimes,a country  informer operates remotely by telephoning or through a neighbour but he will stop visiting and calling if you DO NOT ANSWER THE TELEPHONE...

Say "Skat!"

Sometimes, he may arrive at your door the next day to tell you that he was "concerned" about you. In that instance,you may have to threaten to have him removed by the police.

Getting rid of a haveril from your front living room?

Like all beaten hounds he will eventually go away if you do not talk to him.If he is a nurse, however,he has the potential to become a persistent nuisance and do you great harm. Refusal to pay attention to his bizarre remarks will only intensify a HEAD-THE-BALL's such as a nurse's interest in your personal and private business. This will always be the case UNTIL THE NHS IS BROKEN UP and psychiatric hospitals are closed down.

Where there is a definite problem,there is always a clear solution.

Le macaque

A long-time,trusted informer such as K.,Mc D., F., K.or Mc G. invariably speaks with a yakking tone. 

He or she may guern in a silly fashion or galder in a heightened tone. I am thinking in particular of Mary Mc G. and the belletriste such as Cathy May and the female "poet" who wants to talk about "women's problems".

 Those types I once mocked,reversing the role of the paid informer to turn the table on my Southern Communist foes such as O Riordain, ("Ci sono barbari," "What is to be Done-The Sequel," July-August 1988,Dublin).

Promotion for the informer to the level of MI 5 agent?

A police agent's role is to gain private and confidential information from the host 'beastie' and carry choice pieces of gossip around the entire neighbourhood. His is what is known as 'nuclear' targetting of musicians, playwrights, journalists and broadcasters. 

He exists,as Marx said of the Romanian Jews in the Middle Ages,in "the interstices of society" between governors and oppressed.

He sees himself as socially adept-I am thinking of the politicians's son Manus M. and as an endless font of common wisdom and good sense. This is the type possibly referred to in Marx's writings as the Spiessburger  (huckster, trader in other people's wares). 

In our Irish backwoods,he is often someone referred to by educated people such as Lenin as a 'country wiseacre'.

Informers and police agents aren't a comforter or a 'friend',one of their favourite words. They don't even have one who trusts them. Sometimes,they are the Masonic-type who have made a pact with the devil (Goethe,Faust).

An informer is a pest and a nuisance,worse than the bar-room bard or Irish fireside philosopher.

Some of these people, however,have the potential not to simply cause annoyance but to inflict GREAT HARM and MORTAL INJURY but  is inviting them into your house what Lenin meant by "a simple mistake easily put right"?

 I don't know since I am a pole of attraction for many of these ex-soldiers,their parents,passing strangers,assorted beauty queens and frolicking colleens.

It is best to tell them,in no uncertain terms,"Go!" and "Don't come back!"

Then the anal retentives will depart like a scalded hound and when they telephone your number, DON'T ANSWER.

Informing seems to run in families such as medicine and vintnerage. I am thinking in particular of the Mc G.,the M.,C., F. and the Mc C..

The situation after dramatic change or revolutionary disturbances?

Plus ca change,plus la meme chose because the new rulers will adopt old networks of informers as our new masters in the North of Ireland have adopted RUC/PSNI/NHS/BBaC/ICTU informer networks.

The situation in other countries in the age of democracy?

The topics of policing and espionage are minority interest topics and represent a very narrow field of human interest. While many in the police view may be the target of espionage to considerable effect,only a tiny number are the target in contemporary societies. To say, otherwise is  very foolish. From perhaps 60-70 police targets in 1983 in Fermanagh and putting to one side the activities of gangsters in the Police Service of Northern Ireland,I would reckon that at past levels,no more than 44-48 'targets' merit police interest in the whole of Northern Ireland.

But how many dungflies?

In the North no more than 2 000 in 1999 and newspaper reports indicate that five hundred informers have had their relationship with the PSNI and other armed gangs terminated.

A paid informer,one on a retainer of £30 per week will always have a 't' in their name,as in Tommy and tout. 

An unconscious agent (a cipher) for other individuals and organisations will have no retainer fee paid to him,but will have in his circle of acquaintances someone who is an informer,a paid informer that is,such as Brian Mc Cartney (Keele University, Department of Criminology,US Department of Defense,Hollywood,Co. Down) or 'Patricia Sharkey' (Linda Kowalski).

When someone who merits suspicion enters your abode or residence without invitation or makes a habit of phoning you late at night,it is usually for a surreptitious purpose though he may be isolated or lonely.

If you think he is an undercover policeman he will soon give the game away but if he is a soldier or a damsel-in-distress,his loyalty may be difficult to discern.

One rule applies only in this instance. Ask him on a Sunday,the day of peace,quietness and enlightenment if he has signed the Official Secrets Act.

In this country,a Protestant or British  Army informer is someone who is always borrowing or begging. This part of the informer tradition originates in Christic knowledge where the host beastie is taught to be generous in the Catholic fashion. In the time of Christ,Judas attempted to sow division by pointing out at the visit to Martha and Mary in Bethany how the ointment applied to Jesus feet could have brought in 30 denarii to the disciples.

In the Judaic tradition a hoarder features in the local police coterie of informers and kept men.

In the Irish tradition,how does the cookie crumble?
